Gundi is a glass artist living and creating in the rolling Northumberland Hills east of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, where her studio is perched on a hilltop overlooking fields, forest, marsh and creek. She was born in Germany and lived for 20 years in the seductive sunny climate of Chile before moving to Canada in 1973. You might well think that the inspiration for her creations in glass comes from the extreme cold and intense bright light of the Canadian winter or the sparkling icicles that spill from the roof. Nature is, indeed, a real source of the vibrant energy and flowing shapes that permeate Gundi's larger sculptural pieces, shapes that contrast strongly with the regularly layered levels of glass. Newer pieces are increasingly infused with bold, colorful edging, which can be customized according to taste. They reflect Gundi's innate sense of design, enhanced by her several years as a fashion designer specializing in the design and production of suede and leather garments. Each piece is painstakingly created by cutting plate glass into small pieces, tumbling them to take away sharp edges, and then fusing them into stunning forms using an ultra-strong clear bonding adhesive. This unique creative process yields multi-faceted sculptures which glint beautifully in sunlight and form wonderful centerpieces when enhanced by spot lighting or illuminated from below especially at night.
