A. Samuel Briseno Sculptural Designs
In Steel
Nature and man's kinship to it is a recurring theme in the remarkable
fabricated steel sculpture of A. Samuel Briseno. His background as a welder
and millwright for ten years provided him with an intimate knowledge of
steel and its properties. Metal became the medium for Sams artistic
expression. He uses no precut pieces. Each sculpture is unique, and an
expression of his love and commitment to nature and to his craft.
Sam uses 10 to 14 gauge steel which he torch cuts and shapes on an anvil,
swage block, or wooden blocks. Pieces are then welded together with a
wire welder which is also used to apply textures and fill. Grinders are
used to refine shapes. For detailing he uses wire bar and stock.
Color is achieved through applying brass, copper and bronze to the base
metal, through chemical oxidation, and through heat treatment. Pieces
are then sealed with clear lacquer to protect them from moisture.
