The Gerhard collection represents innovative, contemporary jewelry design. It features over 150 exclusive handmade designs by leading metalsmith Gerhard Herbst, all pieces individually and elegantly crafted from sterling silver and karat gold.
Gerhard's inspiration began at age 15 when he took a jewelry-making class. He became determined to pursue his interest in art and jewelry as a career. Gerhard earned a BA in sculpture and jewelry design from SDSU, where he received many scholarships and awards for his work.
Gerhard creates his jewelry as sculptural forms designed to complement the body. Using traditional metalsmithing techniques, he uniquely combines hand-forging with anticlastic raising to create dimension and volume in his work. Gerhard commonly starts with a single sheet of metal. He hammers the material, stretching and compressing the metal to a very high temper resulting in jewelry of superior quality that is durable, flexible and hard.
