Dutch Schulze Contemporary Glass
Dutch Schulze began his career as a sculptor in 1970, working with
clay and carving wood, while living in the mountains near Aspen, Colorado.
He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1968, and studied Art
and Art History for a year at Wagner College in Bregenz, Austria. In 1975,
Dutch moved to Southern Oregon and started working with different media.
By 1985 he was creating glass sculpture using the paté de verre
technique. With the opening of the Plum Tree Glass Studio at Sixes, Oregon,
Dutch had access to hot glass and began making sand-cast sculptures. In
1987, he joined the Hawthorne-Nowak glassblowing team, assisting them
with their large blown glass pieces, and began practicing the complex
skill of glassblowing.
In 1991, Dutch built his first hot-shop, Vitra Blown Glass Studio, in
a quiet, rural area south of Bandon, Oregon. In 1997, Dutch and his family
moved the hot-shop to the town of Bandon, and expanded their studio to
include a glass art gallery. Their new facility is called Bandon Glass
Art Studio.
